Rights come with responsibilities. Every Indian citizen must honour these 11 duties — the other side of the citizenship covenant.

Fundamental Duties

1976

Added by 42nd Amendment (Swaran Singh Committee)

2002

11th duty added by 86th Amendment (RTE)

Fundamental Duties are not justiciable — meaning courts cannot directly enforce them. However, Parliament can legislate to enforce them. They also serve as an aid to interpret laws and the Constitution.
